Defined
as the "Pearl of the Mediterranean’’, Ustica is a true Paradise,
a natural aquarium that holds 50% of the Mediterranean species of flora
and fauna...“Blessed be you, who were born in Ustica, and live in
Ustica!” (L.
S. d'Asburgo Lorena) The island Ustica derives its name from the Roman name Ustum, which means "burnt". |
|
|
It is probably due to its volcanic aspect and its particular geological structures. This name, however, is contradicted by the green that covers the isle and brightens up its landscape. The Island of Ustica was the first Mediterranean resort to be declared marine natural reserve. |
|
| It is an authentic Paradise, thirty-six miles away from the Sicilian Coast, which holds in the depths of its waters most of the marine fauna and flora of our Mare Nostrum. Ustica has been divided into three naturalistic areas in order to avoid the harmful effects of an indiscriminate tourism and has been subject to a series of interventions in defence of its inestimable natural patrimony. | |
